Substitute Bus Driver Accused Of Incorrectly Picking Up Students, Dropping Them Off In Wrong Neighborhood

UPDATED: Wednesday January 9, 2013 6:27 PM

Newark City Schools officials said on Wednesday that they were investigating allegations that a substitute bus driver acted inappropriately.

According to the district, a substitute driver, who officials said had worked for the district for a number of years, incorrectly picked up two elementary students who were not supposed to be on his bus and then dropped them off in a different neighborhood on Friday.

District officials said that the students, ages 7 and 9, were not on his route. About a mile into the trip, the students, who were supposed to be dropped off at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Elementary School, were the ones who brought the mistake to the driver’s attention.

“The students pointed over and saw a friend’s house, and the friend rides the same bus that they do, and they said, ‘We can catch the bus here at our friend’s house,’” said Seth Roy with the Newark City School District.

The district said that the bus driver went against protocol when he let the children get off the bus.

The substitute bus driver remains on the job while the district continues to investigate.
