Police are investigating a home invasion in Gahanna where four masked people allegedly broke into a home and attacked a man and his wife.
According to investigators, the break-in occurred in the 1400 block of Harrison Pond Drive around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Two people, a husband and wife, were inside the home when the robbers broke a window with a rock and entered.
Police said that the husband, identified by police as Harold Hawkins, was beaten by the armed men and woman who were wearing masks.
Authorities said that the robbers were described as three men and one woman.
“One of the intruders dragged the female home owner out of the bed and the other three intruders assaulted the male homeowner,” said Lt. Thomas Bass of the Gahanna Division of Police.
They got away with a gun that was inside the home, along with the victims’ car and cell phones.
After the robbers left, Hawkins was able to get to a neighbor’s house, where he called 911.
Dispatcher: Did they kick in your door? Or did you open the door for them?
Caller: I didn't have time to go through the house. I just made the phone call right off the bat.
Dispatcher: Ok - so how did … so, they assaulted you also?
Caller: Yes ma'am I'm bleeding from head to toe here
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified because of safety concerns, said that the crime was one she never imagined would happen in her neighborhood.
“That was a couple of doors down,” Martha said. “That could have been next door. It could easily have been my house. I’m not going to change what happened, affect my life, you know. I’m just going to live it the way I live it. I’m going to try to be safe, but it’s not going to change what I do.”
The couple’s car was found at an East Columbus apartment complex on Heatherbridge Lane about a half hour after the home invasion.
Several weapons were located inside that car, and police were searching the vehicle for fingerprints.
Anyone who saw anything at either of these locations is asked to contact authorities.
