Columbus Police say no officers were injured in a shooting on S. 17th Street. Get the story.
Three central Ohio men are being charged with stealing $38,000 from a casino winner.
Ronald Jones, Wendell Watkins, and Ryan Bundy are accused of breaking into a home on Glen Rock Drive and taking the money from a man who had just won at the Hollywood Casino Columbus.
Court records indicate that the theft occurred the morning of Oct. 21.
The victim, David Hayes, said he was awakened by two suspects, Jones and Watkins, standing over him with a handgun at about 7 a.m. Bundy was also allegedly present in the residence during the incident.
Hayes said that he spent five hours playing blackjack inside of the Hollywood Casino Columbus. He won $38,000 in cash.
“I stood out like a sore thumb from the moment I was playing to the moment I cashed out all the way to the car,” Hayes said. “I didn’t know what to do with it, because it was basically the size of a brick. They gave me a folder that this would be good enough, so I walked out with a football-sized envelope full of cash.”
Hayes said that he believes Jones, Watkins and Bundy followed him home from the casino.
Police said that they were able to catch one of the suspects because he was overheard bragging about the robbery.
The men have been charged with aggravated robbery.
A judge set bond for Jones at $250,000 on Monday. Bundy is in custody and was arraigned last month. A warrant has been issued for Wendell Watkins.
Anyone with information about Watkins' whereabouts is asked to call police at 614-645-4545.
Hayes said that though he lost thousands of dollars, he kept something that was much more valuable.
“I’m happy to have my life,” Hayes said.
Hayes said that next time he wins a big jackpot, he plans to ask for a check and be more vigilant in knowing who is around him.
