An Athens county school district voted Tuesday night to suspend a physical education teacher accused of using force against a 7-year-old student.

Anthony Mollica, 54, a gym teacher at Nelsonville-York Elementary School, was suspended immediately and indefinitely with pay.

The Nelsonville Police Department confirmed to 10TV News that Mollica is now facing assault charges in relation to the alleged Dec. 12 incident.

According to police, the alleged victim and a parent reported that the student was assaulted by the teacher.

The school district told 10TV Monday that Mollica was suspended for five days following the report but was allowed to return to school following the suspension.

Parents were upset Mollica was back at school and Tuesday night the school board decided to extend the suspension indefinitely.
