UPDATED: Monday December 31, 2012 11:12 AM

Columbus police are warning residents not to fire guns into the air to welcome in the New Year.

Authorities said the practice is against the law and potentially deadly.

In 2008, Columbus police were called to three separate incidents where revelers fired guns into the air at the start of the New Year.

In 2009, a 6-year-old boy was killed in Florida when he was struck by a stray bullet just after midnight.

Police said if you are spotted firing weapons into the air, you will be charged and taken into custody.
