The father of an 8-year-old girl who goes to a Connecticut elementary school says his daughter heard two big bangs there this morning, and teachers then told her to get in a corner.

Stephen Delgiadice says his daughter is fine -- but students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown were visibly shaken after a shooting at the school.

An official with knowledge of a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school says 27 people are dead, including 18 children.

A person with knowledge of the shooting says the shooter, who apparently had two guns, was killed.

Delgiadice says the shooting was "alarming" -- especially in a community that he always considered "the safest place in America."

A photo posted by the Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of children -- some crying, others visibly frightened -- being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, with their hands on each other's shoulders.
