Upper Arlington officials are urging residents to register for the city's newest alert system.

The city's old system called people on their home-phone landlines, but because more people have cell phones now, the city has switched to an updated system.

Once residents sign up, police dispatchers also can reach them by cell, text, or email.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Young says UA Alert allows officials to notify the entire community, or just a small segment, anytime there is a situation like a gas leak, water line break, auto accident, road closures or police emergency.

Residents can sign up for the service at the library, at city hall, or online.
