Police said that a teenager was shot to death while burglarizing a northeast side apartment.
The 17-year-old boy was allegedly breaking into an apartment, located along Stonecastle Drive, around 8 p.m. Wednesday, when he was shot and killed.
According to neighbors and police, the teen was with several other people at the time.
Police confirmed that another apartment was broken into on the same night, but no one was home at the first location.
“For three weeks, I've been told the office somebody's between the buildings, and then last night, that was it,” said one neighbor, who did not want to be identified.
The woman told 10TV that she heard the gun shots from her neighbor’s apartment and went outside where she came face-to-face with the burglars.
“There was two that ran this way. They hopped in the car. The other boy collapsed when I was there,” she said.
She was emotional as she talked about the 17-year-old burglary suspect who she said died in her arms.
Another neighbor told 10tv she was worried for not only the victim of the burglary, but also for the family of the deceased burglar.
“He was young. He's just a young kid, but people's afraid. People breaking in these houses, but you don't now what you got. I feel for anybody's child, that's somebody's child whether he did wrong or not, that's still somebody's child. And the guy that did it, I feel for him, because he was, you know, three people after him. They could have very easy killed him,” she said.
Police said the tenant wasn't hurt, nor was anything stolen from him.
They're not releasing his name, since he wasn't charged. They're also not releasing the name of the teenager, as they continue to investigate.
Detectives are actively searching for the burglar’s accomplices, who police said got away in a silver Cadillac with tinted windows.
