Orange Township officials said that they will delay plans to move forward with firefighter layoffs.
According to an Orange Township trustee, the board voted on Friday to use money from the township's general fund to pay 22 firefighters through at least May, if the township is unable to pass a 7.5 mill levy in February.
Township officials could have the option to put a levy on the May ballot.
Trustee Debbie Taranto told 10TV News that township officials still are fighting to get a levy on the February ballot, even though the Delaware County Board of Elections rejected the township's paperwork earlier this week, citing that it was turned in too late.
Taranto said that the township has enough carryover and $1.1 million in its general fund to pay the firefighters through May.
Taranto said that if a levy fails in May then the township will have to rethink the structure of the fire department.
The township's fire levy failed at the ballot in November.
