Newark Police Reorganizing Officers To Deal With Shortage

A budget shortfall has the Newark Police Department reorganizing its department.

Newark Police Chief Steven Sarver said some officers from the city's Neighborhood Impact Unit will be reassigned to regular beats in 2013.

The city asked the police department to cut 2 percent from the budget. The goal is to minimize job cuts.

Newark Police is also dealing with a shortage of officers.

According to The Newark Advocate
, In 2010, the department had 81 police officers. At the beginning of 2013, there will be 70 officers.
