A man who was discovered shot in east Columbus Thursday morning was stealing tires, according to the man who pulled the trigger.
Police responded to the 600 block of Bulen Avenue on a report of a theft in progress around 4:38 a.m.
"I heard a noise, and the owner of the house said ‘Call 911,’” said one witness who did not want to be identified.
On the 911 recording obtained by WBNS-10TV, a caller said that a man wearing black and a mask was stealing tires off of a car.
When police arrived, they discovered the shooting victim, Darryn Davis, inside a detached garage in an alley between Bulen and Fairwood.
Police said the owner of the car, 58-year-old Mikey Cotton, told them he had seen Davis crouched down next to his car while a second man rolled one of his tires down the alley.
Cotton told investigators that someone had tried to car bomb his garage before, so he grabbed a loaded shotgun and walked toward his back door.
He said that he fired a single shot in the direction of the garage.
Davis was located on the floor of the garage with a wound to his head. He was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical, but stable, condition.
