Multiple central Ohio school districts, including Columbus City Schools, must find new superintendents and taxpayers must foot the bill for perks that attract potential superintendents to school districts.
A superintendent oversees buildings, buses, students and teaches—to name a few responsibilities.
WBNS-10TV’s Kristyn Hartman looked through eight superintendent contracts and found salaries from $145,000-$189,000.
That money is promised before perks, which are promised in many contracts. 10TV found stipends to cover car and phone expenses as high as $950 per month.
The Olentangy superintendent is allowed to keep whatever money goes unspent.
When you look at all the extras, it appears the most generous contract belongs to Dublin’s Dr. David Axner. His base pay is near the very top of the pack.
Axner’s contract allows him a $750 per month auto allowance paid for by the school board, and a Dublin Recreation Center family membership. The contract also tacks on around $10,000 for longevity pay and thousands in annuity contributions.
Buckeye Institute Policy Analyst Greg Lawson can laugh off some of the extras, but not all of them.
The perks add up, especially when some school boards use tax tollars to pick up a superintendent’s pension contributions.
Gahanna-Jefferson Schools has a different arrangement with tax payers—they were given a voice. District residents said that they did not want perks in the superintendent’s contract.
Gahanna-Jefferson superintendent Francis Scruci gets a base salary of $170,000 without promised perks in his contract. He even pays his own pension.
With last year’s financial challenges, the Westerville superintendent voluntarily gave back his pension pickup, salary increase and then some for more than $17,000.
The Dublin school board president said that he did not think Axner would have taken the job without the perks. He said that they got their money’s worth out of Axner’s service.
