Ten-Month-Old Released From Hospital After Crash That Killed Mother

A 10-month-old baby and her father were released from a hospital after a crash that claimed the life of her mother.

Ten-month-old Peyton Weaver and her father, Brad Weaver, were hospitalized after their car was struck by a suspected drunken driver along U.S. Route 23.

Heidi Hecker, Peyton’s mother and Brad’s girlfriend, was killed in the crash. Heidi was the youngest of Judd Hecker's three girls. At 36, she was still his baby.

“I still think it’s a dream, or it’s not true,” Judd Hecker.

The night of the crash, Hecker was home listening to his police scanner when he got a phone call from one of Heidi's friend telling him about an accident in Delaware.

“I said are they OK? And she kept crying and everything, and then she said ‘Heidi didn't make it,’” said Hecker.

Investigators said Marc Kraft, 45, was drunk that night and slammed into them.

It was a pain this family has dealt with before.

Twelve-years-ago this Christmas Eve, Judd Hecker said his wife Shirley was on her way to church when she was hit head on by a drunken driver.

“It's bad enough losing one then to turn around and lose another one,” he added.

Losing two loved ones the same way hurts, but what the youngest victim has lost is what makes this family's heart ache.

“It is unbelievable and, of course, emotionally it has wrecked a whole family, and we have to live with the thought of a one-year-old baby growing up with no mother,” said Carl Hecker, Heidi’s uncle.

They also have the fear that the person responsible will somehow do this again.

“Hope he never drives again, but like I said, I want to see him burn in hell,” said Judd.

Hecker's family will receive friends Thursday from 1 -4 p.m. and 6- 9 p.m. at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, located at 1510 West William St.

The funeral will be held on Friday at Epworth United Methodist church in Marion. Friends of the family are organizing a fundraiser to benefit Peyton. They ask contributions be made to a fund in Peyton's name in lieu of flowers.
