A motorcyclist had to have one of his legs amputated at the scene of a south side crash on Sunday.

Police said the man on the motorcycle, identified as Michael T. Doss, was riding southbound on Parsons Avenue around 3 p.m. when a car, driven by an unidentified woman, crossed the center line and hit him.

The impact of the crash was so bad, medical crews had to perform an emergency amputation at the scene. Doss, age 47, was taken to Grant Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Parsons Avenue was shut down from Williams Road to Harland Drive for more than an hour while police investigated.

Police said that the woman driving the car got out of her car and ran from the scene after the crash.

It was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remained under investigation.
