Riverside Methodist Hospital has started a new program in which volunteers who are veterans visit other veterans in the hospital.
The volunteers bring the patients flags and a folder of information about benefits and services for veterans.
Riverside’s volunteer director said that most importantly, the visitors offer friendship based on common ground.
“One the volunteer comes in and starts talking about the program, they perk right up,” said Gerry O’Shaughnessy, volunteer services manager. “It doesn’t matter what branch of service that either of them have been in, there’s a camaraderie there that they feel. They connect.”
O’Shaughnessy said that she believes the veterans program is the first of its kind in Ohio.
