Former Ohio Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Military Appeals and U.S. District Court judge Robert M. Duncan has passed away.
Duncan was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1969. He served until 1971, when he became the first black member of the U.S. Court of Military Appeals.
Former President Richard Nixon appointed Duncan to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in 1974, becoming the first black judge appointed to the federal bench in Ohio.
He also served as the attorney examiner for the Ohio Bureau of Workmen’s Compensation, Columbus city prosecutor and the chief counsel to the Attorney General of Ohio.
Duncan graduated from the Ohio State University with his bachelor’s in 1948 and with his law degree in 1952.
He was inducted into the university’s College of Education Hall of Fame in 1979.
