A new Ohio newspaper poll shows incumbent Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown with a 4-point lead over Republican challenger Josh Mandel.

The poll published by Ohio's largest newspapers Monday shows Brown ahead with 51 percent to 47 percent for Mandel, the current state treasurer. The survey has a 3.1 percentage-point margin of error.

Mandel was 7 points behind in the same poll in September in what has become one of the nastiest and most expensive Senate races being waged in the county.

The telephone poll - using both land lines and cellphones - was conducted by the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati between Oct. 18 and Tuesday of 1,015 likely voters.
