Authorities are warning central Ohio residents of a new scam involving someone pretending to be the Columbus Division of Police.
According to Columbus police, in a recent call, a person posed as a Columbus police detective and asked for personal financial information.
The man portrayed himself as a detective and said that he was working for a company out of New York and wanted to help the victim settle a debt with the company.
In addition to impersonating a police detective, callers are spoofing Columbus police phone numbers, so calls appear to originate from a Columbus Police telephone number.
Police said that officers will never ask for sensitive personal financial information over the telephone and that officers do not conduct debt collection investigations.
If you receive a call from someone you believe is impersonating an officer, you should ask fo their name, badge number and contact number.
