Donald Griffin III, 19, came face-to-face with an intruder breaking into his home on Wednesday, according to Columbus Police.

At the time, his mother was in the Intensive Care Unit of a Dayton hospital.

Cynthia Preston heard the news of the shooting when a neighbor called her.

“She said I just heard about ten gun shots come from your house,” said Preston.

Preston said she “lost it” until her son finally called and explained exactly what happened.

“And my son said he said ‘You don't have any business being in our house’ and he said the guy went to charge at him. And he said ‘When he went to charge at me, mommy, I just unloaded,” explained Preston.

Preston said that while her son is alive, he is still struggling.

“He's very upset, you know, that he had to kill somebody,” she said.

What happened at Preston's home is not the first time that neighborhood has experienced violence.

Preston said that she wants someone to take note of what families in that community are forced to live with.

“While I don't condone my son having a gun, this is one time I am really happy that he had one, because he could have lost his life,” she said.
