Demolition of a blighted property on the near east side of Columbus began Wednesday morning.
The 10-story Poindexter Tower, located along Mount Vernon Avenue, has been empty since 2003. The area has been infamous for murders and other crimes.
Roland Stepney maintained Poindexter Towner for 10 years.
"It was a nice building when I worked there," Stepney said. "I knew every square inch of it. I knew every tenant who lived in there. If you told me their name, I could tell you what apartment they lived in."
Crime soon took over the building, bringing murders, robberies and other issues.
Foreclosures soon followed.
Stepney said that the building held nothing but good memories for him.
"I hope it will become something wonderful that we can all be proud of," Stepney said.
Franklin County is partnering with the city of Columbus on the $1.1 million demolition cost.
The demolition is part of a 27-acre public housing project. What will go in its place is currently unknown, but community leaders said that they would like to see housing return to the space.
