Prosecutors say that 17-year-old Brogan Rafferty is a cold-blooded killer who used Craigslist to lure men to Ohio to take their lives.
On Friday, the one man who says he got away testified against Rafferty.
The focus of the trial, according to the prosecution, is to determine the role Rafferty played in killing three men and in the attempted murder of another.
"He is a student in robbery, deception and murder," said Emily Pelphrey, a special prosecutor with the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
But the defense said another man, Richard Beasley, is the monster in the case.
Prosecutors outlined how the victims had responded to Craigslist ads. They were looking for work in tough economic times.
Ralph Geiger, 56 of Akron; David Pauley, 51, of Virginia; and Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon were all shot and killed. Prosecutors laid out the details in each of their deaths.
One man escaped Rafferty and Beasley. Scott Davis, 49, testified on Friday.
"It was going to be working on a cattle farm, bending fences, taking care of the animals," said Davis.
But Davis said a meeting with his prospective employees quickly turned dangerous.
"When we were going to go back to the road, I heard a cuss word and a gun cock," he said in court. "I knew I was in trouble."
He said he was shot in the elbow. He survived by running and hiding in the woods in southeast Ohio for seven hours.
The defense never denied that these deadly shootings happened.
What they did do is paint Rafferty as a scared teenager, succumbing to the mastermind of his mentor, Beasley.
It will be up to the jury to decide just what part Rafferty played.
