Delaware police released new details about three suspects accused of robbing an elderly woman at gunpoint in her home.
Arlene Shoemaker said that she could never be too safe. She locks her doors and garage, even when she is home.
Shoemaker encouraged her neighbors to do the same after police said thieves targeted her Willow Brook Christian Community and robbed a 66-year-old resident at gunpoint.
“In this day and age, I do believe in tough economic times, we do need to be aware that crimes of opportunity are growing,” Shoemaker said.
Authorities identified one of the suspects as 19-year-old Paul Bradford. Two other boys, ages 12 and 15 were also accused in the robbery.
The victim said that she was gardening when she went back into her garage. When she turned around, she was confronted by the suspects, who ordered into her home.
Once inside, the robbers took cash, a laptop and a camera.
“It was sad,” Shoemaker said. “She had just come back from a trip in Europe. She had over 2,000 pictures and her camera hasn’t been returned.”
The victims said the pictures captured moments from meeting her relatives in Europe for the first time. She is now counting on police to ensure this does not happen again.
People living at the retirement community say they still feel safe. The property owner said that this was the first incident of its kind in the community.
