The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to redo its cloverleaf-style ramps at Interstate 270 near U.S. Route 23 on the north side.

ODOT officials announced on Thursday their plan to add two express lanes to northbound U.S. 23 to allow traffic to move more quickly northbound out of Worthington.

The express lanes will be in a trench and can be accessed fromI-270 in either direction. There will be signs guiding drivers to local or express lanes.

The trench will include two northbound lanes that travel under Campus View Boulevard and Flint Road, according to ODOT officials.

ODOT crews also plan to add a lane to southbound U.S. 23 at I-270.

ODOT Director Jerry Wray said that the congestion was his responsibility to fix.

"This is the fourth most congested area in the state of Ohio," Wray said on Thursday. "So, obviously, a lot of people are losing a lot of time here. When you have that much congestion, you have back-ups. When you have back-ups, you have accidents."

Crews planned to break ground next summer. The project is expected to take about two and a half years.
