Undercover officers said that they caught a man stealing copper wire early Tuesday morning.

Authorities said that a security guard at an AEP facility, located along West Mound Street, spotted a man crawling through a hole in a fence and attempting to grab several rolls of copper wire around 2:30 a.m.

Undercover officers, who were already on the scene, saw the man and gave chase.

Investigators cornered the suspected thief in a nearby apartment complex, where he was arrested. Police also located where the person was attempting to hide wire.

The man, whose identity was not released, faces a breaking and entering charge. Investigators said that other charges would likely follow.

It was not yet known how much copper was taken.
