One person died and others were injured in a crash along state Route 142 and U.S. Route 40 Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the head-on crash between an SUV, driven by 15-year Columbus Division of Police veteran Marcia "Jodi" Frederick, and a Jefferson Township ambulance occurred shortly after 2 p.m.
Frederick, who Columbus police confirmed was currently on the force, died in the crash, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
According to Fraternal Order of Police President Jim Gilbert, Frederick had been battling cancer and had taken some time off.
Law enforcement officials who responded to the scene said that witnesses saw Frederick's SUV go left of center and strike the medic. They said that she did not attempt to brake and that a medical issue could have caused the crash.
Grant and Brenda Osborne, who were in the rear of the medic, were injured in the crash. Both the 67-year-olds were taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus for treatment. Grant was in serious condition and Brenda was recovering on Tuesday evening.
Todd Picken, 31, Evan Strauss, 20, and Richard Forrest, 36, of the Jefferson Township Fire Department also were injured in the crash. The medic was traveling between 40 and 45 mph at the time of the crash.
S.R. 142 was closed between U.S. 40 and I-70 for a number of hours.
