Several families were left without homes after fire swept through an apartment complex Sunday night.

Eight units were damaged in the Lakes Edge Apartments, located along Lands End Circle, when the blaze started around 7:30 p.m.

Some people said that they did not know what was happening until police knocked on their doors.

“I heard commotion with my neighbors and I opened up the door to check and see if everything was okay,” resident Sherita Wallace said. “There was an officer knocking on the neighbor across the hall’s door and then he came over and told me that I needed to leave because everything was going up and it was a loss.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation. The American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced tenants. There were no reports of injuries.
