Central Ohio Community Could Use Casino Tax Dollars To Build New Jail

Thursday September 6, 2012 6:29 PM

Commissioners in Fairfield County will discuss using tax dollars from casinos and racinos around Ohio to build a new county jail.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office operates three jails after opening an annex in 2011.

But the county still has some inmates housed in other counties because of overcrowding.

In October, county commissioners will discuss using tax dollars gained from gambling at casinos and race tracks to help cover the cost of building a new jail.

That jail could cost $35 million, but could house as many as 400 inmates.

Each county receives tax dollars from the casinos and racinos.
