One east side Columbus City School was locked down because of shots fired Wednesday afternoon.

Shady Lane Elementary, located on Shady Lane Road and East Livingston Avenue, was locked down at about 1 p.m.

Sherwood Middle School, which is near Shady Lane Elementary, also was locked down at 1 p.m., but the school lifted the voluntary lockdown at about 1:30 p.m.

Police said Kyle Dawsonia, 22, fired shots at two people in front of Shady Lane Elementary School during a fight. Police said one of the victims also fired a weapon.

According to police, shell casings were found in the area of Shady Lane Road.

Police said Demarco Moorer, 19, and Brian Harris II, 22, were victims. Harris suffered minor injuries when he fell on the ground trying to avoid the gunfire.

It's unclear which victim fired a weapon.  A gun was found ditched along Shady Lane Road near Livingston Avenue.

Police arrest Dawsonia and charged him with two counts of felonious assault.

Parent Jay Day said that he was glad the school acted quickly in ordering the lock down. He said he did wish the school would have notified parents sooner.

"That was a blessing, because you don't know how people respond and react to these situations," Day said. "They still should have at least contacted us."
