A former taxi driver led Whitehall and Columbus police on an early morning chase Wednesday, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

According to Whitehall police, 60-year-old Berhane Kelati was driving without a license when an officer tried to pull him over at about 4:20 a.m.

The chase began in near South Hamilton Road and East Broad Street when Whitehall police ran the tags of a van and discovered the driver's license was suspended.

Officers followed Kelati, who attempted to elude authorities by entering the freeway. The chase ended when the driver crashed along the ramp from southbound Hamilton Road to Interstate 70 west.

The ramp was closed for a short time while crews cleared the scene. Kelati was taken into custody and faces felony fleeing charges.

There were no reports of injuries.
