A 15-year-old boy told his mother that he barely ate, drank or slept for 96 hours while on a video game binge.
The boy, identified as Tyler, said that he played “Call To Duty: Modern Warfare 3” for nearly four dayS straight.
Jennifer Thompson, the aunt of the teen, said that she and the boy’s mother watched him collapse twice, and on the third time, he did not get up.
“His coloring, his lips, it freaked me out,” Thompson said. “I never saw anything like that before. That’s why we thought he took something.”
Tyler’s mother, Jessie Rawlins, said that her son’s blood pressure was dangerously low. He spent three hours in the emergency room at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
“The doctor came back in and said, ‘I want you to understand, you didn’t just pass out. You need to understand that it could have killed you,’” Thompson said.
Doctors told Rawlins and Thompson that Tyler was severely dehydrated and exhausted and that his body was shutting down.
Rawlins said that she never thought video games would have affected her son’s health.
“He’d come out and get food bowls, plates. He’d make food, not a full meal, but he would get something,” Rawlins said.
Rawlins said that the trip to the ER scared Tyler so much that he gave up his Xbox.
“It’s not an uncommon thing,” Jessie said. “These children are ridiculous about these video games. They are just ridiculous with them.”
Rawlins and Thompson said that they hoped other parents would learn from their frightening experience.
