Suspicious Package Prompts Bomb Squad Response

Downtown traffic was disrupted late Wednesday morning because of a suspicious package near the Ohio Statehouse.

According to Columbus police, an unattended backpack was found near the northwest corner of the Statehouse grounds shortly after 11 a.m.

The Columbus Bomb Squad was on scene with its robot, which detonated the package at about 12:15 p.m.

Those in buildings near the Statehouse were asked to stay away from doors and windows while emergency crews responded. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Traffic was allowed to return to the area just before 1 p.m.
