Those who knew a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and dumping her body in North Carolina said that his intelligence could help him elude law enforcement.

Nate Summerfield is accused of strangling and stabbing Lynn Jackenheimer, a mother of two, while on vacation in Nags Head, N.C.

Summerfield drove back to Ashland with his son and Jackenheimer’s 13-year-old daughter and allegedly told a family member that he killed Jackenheimer. He left the children with his brother and was last seen on July 8.

A nationwide manhunt for Nate Summerfield has ensued since then, and U.S. Marshals have set up a command post at the Ashland Police Department.

Megan Cooper said that she did not want people to forget about the manhunt.

“These are the latest flyers,” Cooper said. “As long as we’re out here, he’ll realize we’re not giving up. It’s really frustrating that he’s still out there.’

Stacey Longden, Jackenheimer’s best friend, said that her friend told her that Summerfield had hacked into her computer.

“He’s smart; he’s not the average Joe,” Longden said. “He put a little tracer thing on her Internet and tracked all of her passwords. I mean, what kind of average person does that?”

Marshals said that they believed Summerfield’s intelligence was allowing him to throw detectives from his trail.

Investigators said that they believed that Summerfield left the state, but Longden said that she did not think that he would leave the area.

“I think he’s here in Ohio and that he’s not going to leave Ohio, because his son’s here,” Longden said.

Longdon said that she hoped Summerfield would be caught and questioned.

“You want to know why. Why did you do this?” Longdon said. “What was so bad that you had to kill her?”

The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force is considering moving its command center from the Ashland Police Department to its Richland County offices.

Search teams also have suspended air searches for Summerfield.

Friends said that they thought Sumemrfield was hiding in places that he and Jackenheimer had vacationed together, such as Put-in-Bay or Lake Cumberland.
