Fire crews worked to knock down flames at a northeast side apartment building early Wednesday morning.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the building, located along Donalda Court, around 6 a.m.
Arson investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
Judy Dean, who lives nearby, said that she was awoken by the sound of an explosion.
“You could feel the heat and see the flames,” Dean said.
Firefighters could only work from the front of the building because there were no back roads to the building.
Arson dogs sniffed for clues while residents considered their next steps. Virginia Abrams evacuated her first floor unit with her husband and pets.
“What am I going to do?” she said. “Where am I going to go?”
Investigators carried evidence from a nearby carport, but did not release immediate findings about what could have caused the blaze.
There were no injuries.
