The body of a boy was recovered in Ross Lake on Wednesday morning.
Investigators said that Josh Spencer, 17, and a friend attempted to swim across Ross Lake, located near East Hydell Road, on Tuesday around 11 p.m.
Spencer’s family members said that he and his friend, Kendrick, decided to race across the lake.
“He and Kendrick were racing and they both got tired and they started taking turns holding each other up,” said Spencer’s sister Courtney Spencer. “My brother just got too tired and he didn't make it.”
Witnesses said that Spencer was 25-35 feet from the bank when he drowned. While this has left the family stunned, Courtney Spencer said that they want to honor her brother and celebrate his life.
“He really did care more about everybody,” She said. “He was just a good person.”
Joshua's family said that the recent high school graduate was leaving for the air force this fall. He would have been 18 years-old at the end of the month.
After hours of searching, Spencer’s body was recovered around 1:50 a.m. There were no other reports of injuries.
