Crews have shut off a gas line that was leaking and caused the evacuation of hundreds of people on the Far East side on Sunday.

The gas leak was reported before 11:30 a.m. near Tussing Road and Continental Drive.

Investigators said that water crews were repairing a line when they struck a gas main with a backhoe, causing the leak.

Crews evacuated 500-600 residents from buildings in the area as a precaution.

The line was shut off by around 4:00 p.m. and residents were allowed back in their homes.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.
