A man is in police custody after fleeing from police who tried to pull him over Friday afternoon.

The man, identified as James R. Conrad, drove off after Gahanna police attempted to stop him on Interstate 270 near Hamilton Road.

Conrad allegedly got onto I-670 west and tried to exit at 5th Avenue, traveling at speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour.

He eventually lost control and flipped his car.

"His car then got hung up on a buried guardrail and it kind of rode the guardrail up and then it flipped the car on to its top," Gahanna Police Deputy Chief Kenneth Bell said. "Our officer had said he was going to call the pursuit off until he saw the wheels of the vehicle sticking up in the air and realized what had happened."

When officers questioned Conrad about why he fled, he said it was because his licence was suspended.

"He also told the officer that it was his roommate's car and his roommate didn't know he had the car," Bell said.

Conrad is charged with operating a vehicle without a license, red light violation, felony charges of fleeing from police and eluding officers.

His license was also suspended due to a previous OVI connection.
