The search was on for three men accused of threatening two young girls.
According to one of the girls’ grandmother, her granddaughter said that the girls were walking in the River Valley Highlands neighborhood, northwest of River Valley Mall, when three men pulled up in a pick-up truck.
“We were just riding our bikes, and this guy pulled up and he kind of cornered me,” said 9-year-old Alexis. “He kept saying, ‘Can we rape you?’ When he got to the second time, I just started running off.”
Alexis’ grandmother, Pat, said that she was furious about what her granddaughter told her.
“My granddaughter came running in, panting and kind of hysterical and said that these men tried to stop her and her friend,” Pat said. “I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I let her go out to ride and something happened. It would be awful.”
Pat said that once she made sure the girls were safe, she went searching for the men.
“I’ve been thinking about how I just want him off the streets,” Alexis said.
According to Pat, many people come and collect metal, and she thought the men sounded like they were scrappers.
Neighbor Joe Cline said that he and his neighbors were on high alert after the incident.
“Everybody’s been real cautious and our kids, we have fenced in yards, and they’re not allowed outside the fence until they figure something out,” Cline said.
He said that his 8-year-old daughter takes her cell phone, which has GPS, with her everywhere she goes.
“She knows something’s going on,” Cline said. “She says, ‘Is there a reason we shouldn’t be going outside, Dad?’ and I said, ‘Yes, there’s been some bad men in the neighborhood.’”
Pat said that she hoped the men were caught before it was too late.
“We’re just glad they’re safe and they got away,” Pat said.
A sergeant with the Lancaster police department said that the division had not received any other similar reports but were keeping a close eye on the area.
