A rare operation will take place at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as four people undergo a kidney transplant Wednesday.

Four people will be given a new chance at life, thanks to a few generous kidney donors.

The donors are a part of a chain kidney transplant operation and are people who are not related to the patient.

10TV News will take a look at the operations that will take place on Wednesday.

The Kaufman from Kalida, Ohio, came to the Columbus hospital for their son, Luke, who needs a kidney.

Luke had already undergone a kidney transplant, transplanted from his father. Luke is now in need of another kidney, and his mother was not a match.

That’s until someone from the medical center called Luke’s mother, Kathy Kaufman, and informed her that they found a match for her son and asked if she would be willing to join the chain donation.

“The very next day, they called and said, ‘Guess what? We think we have someone who will match him,’” Kaufman said. “And would you be interested in donating to someone else to do something called a chain donation. And I said, ‘Absolutely.’"

Tune in on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as 10TV takes a closer look at this rare operation.
