The Licking County Coroner's Office said that a man was shot and killed by a wheelchair-bound homeowner after breaking into a house early Sunday morning.

According to investigators, the man, whose identity was not immediately released, broke into a home in the 400 block of Sunset Street.

Once inside the home, the man allegedly used a gun to prod John Mutter awake. When he woke up, Mutter fatally shot the intruder, the Licking County Coroner's Office said.

The intruder's fiancee, Paige Byers, said police came to her door Sunday morning asking questions.

She said she can't believe her fiance would do what he did.

"He came home and said he was going out and hanging out with friends," Byers said.

The Licking County Coroner said the intruder had no identification on him. He was shot multiple times inside the home and the motive appears to be the attempted theft of prescription drugs.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to positively identify the body.

The homeowner was not charged.

Johnstown police were not immediately releasing any more details about the crime as the events surrounding the shooting were under investigation.
