A Clark County native was identified on Saturday as one of the 12 people killed in the Colorado movie theater massacre.
David Jackson described his stepson, Matthew McQuinn, as someone who was always ready to help his friends.
The 27-year-old technical support provider grew up in Springfield, Ohio and moved to Denver last November with his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler.
Yowler is originally from St. Paris in Champaign County.
The couple went to see a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" with Yowler's brother, Nick. According to Jackson, McQuinn spoke with his mother just before the three went into the Century 16 theater in Aurora.
"And he told his mom, 'Well, Nick's here now, so we better go. I'll talk to you later." And that was it," Jackson said.
Minutes later, as the movie was starting, Aurora police say James Holmes, 24, burst into the theater and opened fire. Nick Yowler has said the last thing he remembers was McQuinn diving on top of his sister to shield her from the gunfire.
His stepfather said that fits his character.
"Well, I know he's a hero. And it's not surprising to me that his first thought would be her. That's what a man does. He protects his loved ones. And I'm very proud of him," Jackson said.
McQuinn suffered three gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. His family did not receive confirmation of his death until approximately 10 hours after the shooting.
Nick Yowler was not wounded. His sister, Samantha, was shot once in the leg. She underwent surgery for her bullet wound and was listed in fair condition at a Denver-area hospital Saturday night.
