Four of the people in the theater during the Colorado massacre were from Ohio.

One Ohio man is among the 12 killed.

A family attorney said 27-year-old Matt McQuinn was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire in the Friday morning shooting in Aurora.

McQuinn's girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, was shot but was expected to survive.

Yowler's brother, Nick Yowler, was not injured.

McQuinn grew up in Springfield. He met Samantha Yowler at a Clark County Target where the two worked together.

The couple moved to Colorado eight months ago to pursue a new opportunity with Target in Denver.

A statement was provided by an attorney representing the McQuinn and Yowler families.

"The McQuinn and Yowlers families would again like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and concern. Samantha Yowler was hit by a bullet in her knee from the shooting in Colorado. She is recovering from surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Nick Yowler was unharmed during the incident. Unfortunately, Matt McQuinn perished from the injuries he sustained during the tragic events that unfolded in Denver, Colorado and went home to be with his maker. As both families mourn the loss of Matt, they ask for everyone to give them distance and time. Again, the families thank everyone for their love, prayers and ask that we respect their families' wishes."

Community members in the town where McQuinn grew up expressed condolences and said McQuinn's action was a selfless act of bravery.

"It's sad that that's the ending for him, especially when it's somebody who's willing to help somebody else," said Heather Newland.

Another Ohio man, Gage Hankins of Forest, was also shot.

Hankins was in the next theater over from the attack, and was struck in the arm by a bullet that went through the wall.

He was released from the hospital and was expected to return to Ohio on Monday.
