Investigators have yet to release the cause of a young couple’s death.

Police said that a maintenance worker found the man and woman, identified as Jamaila Gammon, 23, and Jamel Cribs Jr., 36, dead inside a vacant apartment, located along the 2200 block of Wabash Court, on the southeast side, on Wednesday evening.

Police said that the couple once shared the apartment.

The maintenance worker noticed a cracked window and investigated. The employee and the property manager found the bodies in a first-floor apartment. The two were lying side by side.

Police said that there was no sign of forced entry into the unit. Homicide detectives were on scene and were investigating the deaths as a double homicide.

Neighbor Damon Brown said that he knew right away who police found in the vacant apartment on the ground floor of his building.

“We just started putting two and two together: it was a man and a woman, those two hadn’t been seen, their phones were going straight to voicemail, and we just kind of figured it out,” Brown said.

Brown said that he lived two doors down from the couple and did not notice anything out of the ordinary.

“They did their normal routine, walk to the store together, they stayed a close-knit family,” Brown said.

Brown said that there has been a recent rash of break-ins at the apartment building.

“It’s been rough out here,” Brown said.

The cause of the couple's death was not immediately known.
