UPDATED: Thursday July 19, 2012 6:23 PM

A 19-year-old man was charged with four felony counts after police said that he stole an officer’s cruiser and fled.

David J. O’Neal is in the Fairfield County Jail on $500,000 bond. Police said O’Neal ran from an officer, jumped into an unoccupied cruiser and drove away on Tuesday afternoon.

10TV News video captured the officer shooting at the man as he drove away in the cruiser.

O’Neal was taken into custody by police near Bentley Station Place on the Far East side. Police said that O’Neal crashed the cruiser, jumped from a second-story balcony and was arrested. He was treated and released from Grant Medical Center.

O’Neal is charged with felony counts of grand theft auto, receiving stolen property, vandalism and obstructing official business.

Police said that they believed O’Neal, along with another man who police were still searching for, were involved in a break-in that prompted another police-involved shooting early Tuesday morning blocks away from where O’Neal was taken into custody.

Destin Thomas, 21, the resident of the apartment and victim of the alleged burglary, was shot and killed by police in connection with the Tuesday morning police-involved shooting.
