More than 36,000 Franklin County AEP Ohio customers were without power because of damage at a north Columbus substation.

Storms caused a broken cross arm outside of AEP Ohio’s Karl Road Substation.

According to police, eight or nine homes along Norma Road and Nestling Drive were evacuated shortly before 3 p.m. because of a report of a fire in connection with the damage.

Residents were allowed back inside their homes a short time later. Residents reported that they returned to their homes, which did not have power.

Residents in the area were expected to have power back by 8 p.m.
