Man Accused Of Trying To Run Over Police Charged

A man police said forced them to open fire in the Arena District is in jail on $500,000 bond.

Prosecutors charged Douglas Wiegand with felonious assault on a peace officer.  Police said that additional charges could be filed.

Investigators said that on July 7, they confronted Wiegand, 50, in a parking lot near North Front and Vine streets In the Arena district.

They said Wiegand appeared highly intoxicated, got into his car and drove it toward officers.

They said officers were forced to shoot Wiegand, who was treated for a gunshot wound.

A bystander, Heather Garrett, 29, was struck in the gunfire.

She was released from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on July 10.
