Investigators said that they were working to learn if speed played a role in a deadly Monday afternoon crash.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Andrew Gayheart, 20, was driving a car southbound on S.R. 13 near Ginger Hill Road when he lost control, went left of center and struck another vehicle, driven by Brenda Hoadley, 52, of Newark.

Addison Craft, 8, who was in the backseat of Gayheart’s car, was pronounced dead on the scene. His stepsister, Keybence Harstine, 6, was taken by helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

Troppers said that Hartsine was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It was unclear if Craft, a student at Utica Elementary school, was restrained.

Investigators said that they would inspect both vehicles to see if either driver was speeding at the time of the crash.

Both of the drivers were taken to Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark where they were treated and released.
