A congregation was praying on Monday for the return of a beloved cross that was lost in recent storms.

When Pastor Irene Wilson first saw the damage at The Old Country Church, located at 101 S. 5th St., she said she was overwhelmed with emotions.

“Oh my goodness,” Wilson said. “I swear I cried for three days.”

Wilson said that a neighbor saw the wind sweeping the tower of the church away. The cross, which stood atop the steeple, has not been seen since.

As workers continued their cleanup in front of the church, Wilson said that her hope of discovering the cross was starting to fade.

“I told them, ‘Call me the minute that you find it,’” Wilson said. “I’ve been hearing that right now they don’t think it’s under there.”

If the cross does not show up under the debris, Wilson said that she would assume that someone has found it and does not know it belongs to the 150-year-old church.

Wilson said that church members continued to attend services, and pray that, somehow, their old cross would turn up.

“This is what we live by. That’s all I know,” Wilson said. “That’s what we have to live by.”
