Police said that two people were struck during an officer-involved shooting in the Arena District early Saturday morning.
According to police, officers first confronted Douglas Wiegand in a parking lot, near North Front and Vine streets, when he allegedly urinated in public at about midnight.
Wiegand allegedly ignored the officer’s command to stop his vehicle and fled the scene.
A short time later, Wiegand stopped his vehicle behind a parked police car, located near Kilbourne and Vine streets. When officers attempted to take him into custody, Wiegand allegedly got back into his vehicle and accelerated toward the officers.
Wiegand, who was struck once, continued to flee from officers and was taken into custody near Neil Avenue and Spruce streets. He was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in serious condition.
Police said that a 29-year-old bystander was struck by gunfire during the incident. She was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where she was expected to recover.
Wiegand was charged with felonious assault. Police said that they believed he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The identity of the bystander was not immediately released.
