A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday in connection with a fatal hit-skip crash.

Matthew J. Jones was sentenced in connection with striking Lai Phan and his girlfriend with a vehicle and then running from the scene.

The crash occurred on Aug. 1, 2010, near the Ohio State University Campus.

Phan died from his injuries, and his girlfriend was seriously injured.

In court on Thursday, Jones, 22, apologized to the Phan's family. He said that he ran from the scene because his friends were being assaulted.

Phan’s mother, Laurie Russell, said that she had hoped Jones would have received a life sentence.

“If I had my choice, it would be life,” Russell said. “I’m going through a life sentence right now. These babies are going through a life sentence, because they don’t have their dad.”
