Many who were forced to file insurance claims because of storm damage said on Monday that they hope they are never forced to do so again.

According to insurance experts, most homeowners’ insurance covers typical storm damage, such as tree removal, damage caused by wind, tornadoes, hail and lightning strikes.

Many policies also will pay for refrigerated food that residents are forced to throw away because of power outages.

Amy Brown said that she was forced to file an insurance claim for the first time because of storm damage.

“I’m a, ‘Let’s just get something done,’ person. It was, ‘Let’s get this tree removed.’ I called my insurance agent, called AEP,” Brown said.

Brown said that a lightning strike broke off parts of a neighbor’s oak tree, which crushed her garage. One of Brown’s trees then took out another neighbor’s garage.

Brown said that she called Trapper’s Tree Service to help remove the debris.

“Well, I mean, there’s nothing I can do about it at this point but wait until the tree’s removed, then figure out what I’m going to do about my garage,” Brown said.
